Photo by James Whitlow Delano @jameswhitlowdelano for @everydayclimatechange: California’s Growing Climate Crisis: Scenes from the Woolsey fire in Malibu which incinerated during the 96,949 acres (39,234 hectares) between 8–21 November 2018, killing 3 people, destroying 1,643 buildings, forcing the evacuation of an estimated 295,000 people and 105,000 residences, and melted glass when consuming automobile as in the third image. Malibu, California, USA Total property losses could reach and estimated US$4 billion to US$6 billion. The recording-breaking 2018 wildfire season burnt a total area of 1,893,913 acres (766,439 ha) after wildfires devoured 1,248,606 acres (505,293 ha) in 2017. 9 out of 10 of the largest wildfires in California have occurred since 2003. #climatechange #climatecrisis #fire #wildfire #megafire #california #water #malibu #jameswhitlowdelano

Photo by James Whitlow Delano @jameswhitlowdelano for @everydayclimatechange: Standing trees that have died in a climate change-induced bark beetle infestation. Sequoia National Forest, California, USA Before the climate began warming, enough bark beetle eggs died in winter so that the trees' natural defenses could hold the beetles at bay. With warmer winters, more eggs survive and the proliferation of bark beetles means that Sequoia National Forest’s and National Park’s forests are dying and becoming more vulnerable to forest fire, which increases the threat to irreplaceable giant sequoia trees further up the mountain in the national park. #climatecrisis #climatechange #infestation #fire #sierranevada #sequoianationalforest #california #jameswhitlowdelano

Photo by James Whitlow Delano @jameswhitlowdelano for @everydayclimatechange : California’s Growing Climate Crisis: What could possibly go wrong? Houses, along the Pacific Coast Highway built on posts where the tide washes up under the house. With higher storm surges due to climate change a house where high tide on a calm day washes underneath is simply an accident waiting to happen. Malibu, California, USA Climate scientists have predicted that climate change will bring stronger storms, along with prolonged drought and bigger wildfires - all of which California has experienced in the extreme in the past decade and a half. Not visible here but two houses down, houses were damages in the Woolsey Fire. #climatecrisis #climatechange #california #risingseas #malibu #jameswhitlowdelano #pch

Photo by James Whitlow Delano @jameswhitlowdelano for @everydayclimatechange: Part of the 96,901 acres (39214 hectares) of Yosemite National Park burnt by the Ferguson Fire between 13 July – 19 September 2018. The Sierra Nevada Mountains, California, USA. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are particularly vulnerable to fire due to an infestation of bark beetles exacerbated by global warming, combined with the worst drought in 1,200 years from 2011 - 2017. The recording-breaking 2018 wildfire season burnt a total area of 1,893,913 acres (766,439 ha) after wildfires devoured 1,248,606 acres (505,293 ha) in 2017. 9 out of 10 of the largest wildfires in California have occurred since 2003.There are 2.4 million dead trees in Yosemite National Park due to a bark beetle outbreak brought on by global warming. Yosemite National Park, California, USA Bark beetles eggs are resistant to cold up to -30 F (-34C). Before the climate began warming, enough bark beetle eggs died in winter so that the trees' natural defenses could hold the beetles at bay. With warmer winters, more eggs survive and the proliferation of bark beetles has decimated Yosemite's forests, already weakened by the worst drought in 1,200 years. #climatecrisis #climatechange #fire #yosemite #fergusonfire #california #sierra #jameswhitlowdelano
