Katherine Johnson, a pioneering #NASA mathematician who broke gender and racial barriers during her historic career, has died at the age of 101. Johnson played an integral yet unsung role in many early, critical successes of the U.S. space program. She was also the main subject of the 2016 film Hidden Figures, which finally chronicled her ground-breaking early career. In 2015 Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, the United States’ highest civilian honor. | 📷: Donaldson Collection/Michael Ochs Archive, @connorkris / WireImage | #KatherineJohnson #WomenInScience⠀

On 23 February 1945, a group of US Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi amidst the fierce fighting of the Battle of Iwo Jima, during the Pacific War. The moment produced one of the most recognisable photographs of WWII, captured by Joe Rosenthal. Used as source material for the US Marine Corps War Memorial by sculptor Felix de Weldon, the image is heavy with symbolism. This alternative picture expands the story, showing a first flag being exchanged for another. Having signalled to troops on the beach below that the Mount had been seized, the flag was said to have been substituted so that it could be returned to the battalion as a souvenir. Dispatching an officer with the replacement, the Lieutenant Commander called out as an afterthought: “And make it a bigger one.” 📷: Louis R. An iconic image, the Slim Aarons photograph known as 'Poolside Gossip' is this year marking its 50th anniversary. Taken in January 1970 in Palm Springs, California, it came to define an image of mid-century modernism. Scroll through to enjoy original ephemera from Slim's own archive, housed at the @gettyarchive in London.⠀ ⠀ The Poolside Gossip story begins with the 1946 design of the house by architect Richard Neutra, commissioned by businessman and philanthropist Edgar J. Kaufmann.⠀ ⠀ On assignment for Holiday magazine, when Slim visited 'The Kaufmann House' in 1970, it belonged to art dealer Joseph Linsk and cultural patron Nelda Linsk. It would make the perfect backdrop to promote Palm Springs as a winter vacation destination.⠀ ⠀ Part of the same New York circle, Slim phoned Nelda to arrange the shoot and asked her to invite some friends along. A seemingly trivial request, Nelda’s friends became the life-blood of Poolside Gossip. ⠀ ⠀ Lita Baron, the actress and singer, cuts a glamorous figure, walking down alongside the pool. Model Helen Dzo Dzo appears perfectly poised with lacquered hair and dressed in white lace, sat with Nelda Linsk in sunshine yellow.⠀ ⠀ The photoshoot took just an hour and a half, everyone taking care of their own make-up and wardrobe. Slim just took his tripod and camera along, and captured a brilliantly colourful series of photographs. One of the shots was used in a double-page spread, shown here, and the series is now regarded as Slim’s signature work.⠀ ⠀ The Poolside Gossip story is being celebrated by the @gettyimagesgallery throughout 2020. This weekend sees a return to the home of Poolside Gossip, with a special event in Palm Springs as part of @modernism_week. @gracehomefurnishings will be hosting an evening with Nelda Linsk herself, with cocktails, a unique photo op and of course, plenty of gossip.⠀ Follow our bio link for more gallery news.⠀ 📷: Slim Aarons/Hulton Archive/Getty Images⠀ ⠀ #slimaarons #poolsidegossip #gettyimagesgallery #gettyarchive #palmsprings #midcenturymodern #midcenturymodernism #modernism #modernistarchitecture #vintagefashion #1970sstyle #interiordesign #fineartprints #gettyimages⠀
