the Dohnanyi Orchestra Strings & @realghostfacekillah acapellas!!??!
that was so wonderful, getting to dj with a live orchestra
and perform a couple tunes with my brother @danmerriweather .
budapest, you were one of my favourite crowds to date.
one night, i was about 20 years old, dj’ing at a club called on the westside h’way called El Flamingo. it was a little slow for a friday night so i was pretty amped/shocked/surprised when Puffy rolled in and stormed the dancefloor with a powerful entourage. naturally, i went into overdrive and started rocking Total, Biggie, Craig Mack, Gina Thompson remixes, all of the big tunes that bore his stamp. he came up to the booth and said, “you’re a producer, huh?” i had aspirations but certainly wasn’t a real “producer” at that point, but i was flattered as fuck. i was also dumbfounded and still hadn’t uttered a response to his initial question so he just added, “i can tell by the way you play records, you’re a producer”. he then tried to give me a hundred dollars, which i turned down, being too proud. “no thank you sir, i just love the music you put out”, i said. “take the fuckin money, i insist”, he answered. this back and forth occurred two more times until he basically just threw the bill on the turntable somewhat exasperated…i took the money home and framed it above my turntables along with his phone number that he gave me that evening. from that point on, he took me under his wing, making me his party dj of choice for a good few years, taking me to play my first bouji-but-rowdy club nights in paris, london, miami. he’s more responsible for where i’m at in my career than he could possibly know. and whenever i see him in recent times, i realize how lucky i was to be around in his era. thank you for the music and your belief in me, and all the motherfuckin’ wonderful times. happy 50th. mark. Please enjoy these snaps from over the years of me trying to finally pay him back as well as our piano and vocal rendition of Bad Boys For Life
