Posted @withrepost • @ashleydeleonpilates #PilatesIsMagic with @zaynagold and @judypilates : Single Leg Stretch * * Inverted Bottom Sprung Single Leg Stretch ✨ * * * I’m currently in a funny place with a long term hip injury. Open chain leg work in a supine position is super irritating so I’m avoiding it for a long while. Inverted, however, open chain is fine! Hence the frequent upside down posts 😜 * * I’ve been working toward holding a handstand for a little under a year. It’s been a goal of mine as long as I can remember so I’ve been focusing a lot of energy into this for the past 10 months or so. * * A recent private handstand lesson with @wolfmovement totally changed my game and inspired a new training protocol. And now I’m finally having moments of balance up there! And let me tell you, it feels even better than I dreamt it would ♥️♥️♥️♥️ * * Saw @pilates_body doing this exercise on her forearms this past spring and have loved it ever since. If you try this with straight arms please exercise extreme caution!!! This is VERY challenging and a bit dangerous. 1 light spring (I’m using a Balanced Body short blue spring). Posted @withrepost • @rev@revivalpilates #sur#sur#surgerytostrong I owe this week to @kas@kassam01 who not only showered me with a yummy zucchini slice and protein balls but asked me if was exercising to which I said No 😞. She reminded me by saying “what do you say to all of us ?! - exercise makes you feel better “ . Today marks 9 straight days in hospital for my poor hubby and it’s so easy to fall into a “slump” of not looking after yourself 😞 . Turns out @kassam01 was right I DID feel better after this even though I really didn’t want to do anything. I sweated (sparkled as we call it ), I got on that bloody spin bike , I worked my legs, butt and did some HIIT finishing off with some abdominals 👏🏻👏🏻🤣 . This little ab series is part of the big 5 in pilates with @judypilates and @zaynagold #pilatesismagic 💜 . My abdominals are still internally healing so I’ve used the therabands as a wonderful leg support while I work my abdominals. Legs are called “levers” in Pilates The longer and further away from the midline the legs are, the harder the exercise becomes Without support or correct abdominal control the legs in double leg stretch can cause the spine to arch increasing lumbar spine load 🤣 . One leg on the ground will also modify the load on the spine and abdominals The therabands gently support the legs taking some of the weight out of those long levers enabling the transverse abdominals to shine 👍🏻 . I know there’s no video of me actually sweating and working hard but pinky promise I did !! . I've added the ball under pelvis again for more #ballbalancestability. Single Leg Stretch is the first exercise in the classical #seriesoffive, a go-to in many of my classes or for my own practice. Very intense abdominal strengthening but loads of fun of course. Just balancing on the ball in tabletop is challenging 👍😀. . ✅Position: ➡️Lie on your mat and lift to pelvis to position the ball under tailbone with your spine off the floor, elbows bent under shoulders and upper body supported on forearms. Draw belly button to spine and find stability on the ball. . ➡️Lift legs into table top, shins parallel to ceiling. . 1️⃣Single Leg Stretch - extend one leg away from you at straightening and lengthening the leg, other leg towards body, both moving at same time. The pelvis stays absolutely stable. 2️⃣Single Leg Stretch Unilateral - staying on one side only, hold one leg in tabletop and stretch other leg away. 3️⃣Single Leg Stretch High - a bit of coordination challenge. Stretch one leg parallel to floor and the other leg straight to ceiling then both legs back to tabletop. . ✔ Try for 5-8 reps of each. ✔ Don't forget to breathe! Lift toes a few inches off the mat, take your right hand on to your right ankle, left hand on to the right knee, lengthen left leg away and roll back slowly away from it, keeping the head lifted, nose to knee. Breathe in, pull your right knee closer to your face, curl up more. Breathe out as you switch legs, pulling your left leg in towards your chest. Switch. Keeping in your curled up position, reach your opposite heel away as you draw knee towards your chest, stabilising your pelvis by drawing your abs down and squeezing your pelvic floor. Tips Try to maintain the position of your torso throughout. Think of the back of your chest lifting forward. Feel the opening of the hip as you squeeze the glutes and reach the lengthened leg away. Find the magic in the connection: as much as you draw one knee in, you reach the opposite leg long and away. #abs #quads #hipflexors #glutes #pilates #abdominal #abdominalexercises #pilatescommunity #standinyourmagic #sharethemagic . Full disclosure: sometimes I tell clients to pretend they are closing a door with the extended leg as they bend the opposite knee in to their chest.
