OTD in 2006, our incredible giant squid - affectionately dubbed 'Archie' - went on display. After being accidentally caught by a fishing trawler, the 8.62-metre-long specimen was frozen while a custom-made acrylic tank was constructed. This rare and elusive creature is now housed in the Museum's tank room, and can be seen on a Spirit Collection Tour. Follow our bio link to find out more and see how Archie made her journey from deep sea to display: http://bit.ly/NHM-Giant-Squid #GiantSquid #Squid #Archie #Cephalopod #DeepSea #MarineLife #Wildlife #Oceans #Nature #NaturalHistory #Museum #BehindTheScenes #ThingsInJars #SpiritCollection #Science

Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a prolific geographer, naturalist & explorer. This passion for travel may have been spurred by a sense of social alienation. Humboldt never married and is known to have had multiple gay relationships during his life. Humboldt spent a long time travelling throughout South America. At one point he spent five years with Aimé Bonpland, collecting specimens such as these beetles, across Mexico and the Amazon basin. Many species, from penguins to squid, are now named after Humboldt 🐧🌈🦑 #LGBTHM20 #LGBTHM2020 #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA #NaturalHistory #NaturalHistoryMuseum #SciArt #ScientificIllustration #Illustration #Humboldt #Entomology #Beetles #Insects

Testate amoebae are pretty incredible. Whether its hunting in packs or building shells out of plastic, these single-celled organisms will probably exceed your expectations. #Amoeba #Amoebae #Microbiology #Cell #SingleCelled #SingleCelledOrganism #Organism #BAS #Microbiologist #Science #Nature #Research #TestateAmoebae #NaturalWorld #NaturalHistory #NaturalHistoryMuseum #NaturalHistoryMuseumLondon

A baby gelada will spend the first few weeks of its life being carried around on its mother’s front before moving to her back. Geladas live on the ground and drop down onto ledges in cliff faces for safety when they sleep. Farmland is encroaching on their native grasslands and their habitat is shrinking. Riccardo Marchegiani could not believe his luck when this female gelada walked along the cliff edge where he had been waiting since before sunrise. Keeping a respectful distance, Riccardo composed his shot using a low flash to highlight the gelada’s light brown fur against the distant mountains. The beam also caught the eye of the inquisitive infant clinging to her belly. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition has been extended until Sunday 28 June due to exceptional demand. Weekends often sell out, so click today's bio link or visit nhm.ac.uk/wpy and book now or become a Member to guarantee entry.
