“Taking care of these animals, these animals will also take care of you.” Getting to speak with James Kinyaga, an elder of the Il Ngwesi Maasai tribe was a highlight and a privilege. I asked James what he’d want people to know about Human Wildlife Conflict and he jumped right to the solution, not the “problem.” The Il Ngwesi in a radical move, converted their community land to a conservancy and built a luxury safari lodge which generates revenue for their community 12 months a year, while still preserving their cultural identity as pastoralists. What this boils down to is that the work of Ian Craig and @lew@lewa_wildlife started a movement of community conservation in Northern Kenya that continues to grow, resulting in growing wildlife populations and thriving people where once conflict and wars amongst tribes only occurred, they now are dropping “fences” and joining hands to work together, effectively giving the wildife back to the people who live there. Other countries such as Zimbabwe (among others) as referenced in my last post, are stealing baby elephants from their mothers in the wild and selling them to zoos and circuses for entertainment value. The government profits and claims they need this revenue to protect the remaining wildife. This is a lie perpetuated by the small few who wish to see short term gains and animals who are hunted or exploited become more hostile towards humans resulting in more HWC incidents and deaths. One of the objectives of the documentary was to explore other ways that could flip this archaic model on its head. I wanted to explore how the proximity of the people to wildife COULD result in a better life for all. Il Ngwesei, @lewa_wildlife and @nrt_kenya are among the few organizations that prove this is not only possible, but it is the only sustainable way forward. This man and these people are the hope that all may not be lost, but there is much much work to be done, and absolutely zero time to waste. @eyesofthejungle
